J.D. Martinez Blasts Four Home Runs

Sep 5, 2017 1:21 AM

Diamondbacks slugger J.D. Martinez became the 18th player in major league history to hit four home runs in one game, a feat more rare than a perfect game ... which we had for five innings in this game, making Arizona's 13-0 shutout over the slumping Dodgers one of the craziest games of any year.

Martinez homered against four different pitchers, belting no-doubters off Rich Hill in the fourth inning and then connecting in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings off Pedro Baez, Josh Fields and Wilmer Font.

Clayton Kershaw Sharp In Return

Sep 3, 2017 2:04 AM

Clayton Kershaw was sharp in his first start in five weeks, holding the Padres to two infield singles in six innings in a 1-0 victory Friday night that snapped the Dodgers' season-high five-game losing streak.

Kershaw (16-2) hadn't started since July 23, when he was pulled after two innings with a strained lower back that landed him on the disabled list.

"Efficiency-wise I think it was as good as I could have expected," said Kershaw, who was targeted for five innings or 75 pitches, and threw 70. "I really didn't pitch any differently. I was throwing early strikes where they had to swing the bat."
